Dear
Beginner to Scrapbooking,
You're
here most likely because you have seen
someone elses scrapbook, you have heard about scrapbooking and/or you
wish to make a scrapbook for the first time and have no clue where to
begin. You've
probably seen other Scrapbooking Sites - before coming here. You may
have even been in a few craft or Scrapbooking stores. But you probably
experienced a bit of overwhelm. Am
I correct? Don't
worry, you are not alone. Everyone getting started with Scrapbooking
experiences the same thing. There are too many choices
and no real directions to begin a scrapbook.
(Maybe its card making you want too?).
Either way...your experience is valid. The craft
stores offer isles and isles of scrapbooking supplies and tools. They
even offer scrapbooking magazines and books. But when you browse
through them - you find out pretty quickly one of the following:
-
Very
few of the instructions are meant for beginners.
-
Most
of the instructions are project based only - therefore you have no clue
when you will ever use those same supplies again or how.
- And
almost everything demands a purchase of some sort - (whether it's
scrapbooking tools or scrapbooking supplies (like paper, stickers,
embellishments, ribbons etc.).
What many of the educators out there forget is that
people like to learn what their upfront costs
will be, what their ongoing costs will
be, how they can spread those costs out
(on future projects) and what the payback is (if any). PLUS...beginners
appreciate easy Step by Step instructions.
You
might find the step by step instructions - but if you don't have the
supplies they ask you to have what good are those instructions?
You need simple beginner scrapbooking instructions
- that you can use with any supplies and on any project.
So...I
am here to fill you in on these most pressing concerns...and tell you
the real deal! First...your upfront costs.
Before you even think of spending money on
Scrapbooking Supplies - you should get a feel for the craft. And the
great news is; it does not have
to cost a thing to make a scrapbook page in
the beginning. You probably have all the supplies you need at home.
No - what you have right now might not be acid free
or archival (for long term preservation). But that's okay!
I know for a fact that I have made cards and
scrapbook pages out of paper bags, construction paper and elmers glue
that have yet to fade or fall apart. (Granted...they look a little less
professional - but I was not aiming for professional - I was aiming to
learn scrapbooking). If
you have paper, construction paper, paper bags, tissue paper, scissors,
glue, ribbon, buttons, pens and such lying around the house
somewhere...then you are good to go. You don't need to purchase supplies for your first
scrapbook! Second...your ongoing costs.
If you want to advance a little beyond beginner
scrapbooking and wish to keep going with the craft after you have made
your first few pages with the supplies you already have in your home,
then you will have to make room for a few more expenses.
The good news is...you can save money with
scrapbooking supplies.
From scrapbook papers, to cardstock, adhesives,
ribbons and more - you can gain tremendous savings by purchasing in
bulk - which is the best suggestion up front. But you can also save
money by signing up for special discounts, coupons and more with online
scrapbook sites. PLUS taking advantage of in house coupons at your
craft / scrapbook stores.
You
do not need a "monthly budget" to scrapbook!
As long as you set a goal to rarely ever buy
supplies without discounts...then you can be sure that you are always
benefiting. For
example, when you shop for Scrapbooking Supplies at Costco you can look
to spend the following: - $10.00-$50.00
on scrapbook albums (in many cases 1 , 2 or 3 per pack)
- $12.00-$20.00 on patterned paper slabs
- Upto $25.00 on scissors, shearers, cutting boards +
shape cutters
- Upto
$20.00 on scrapbooking stickers / pens / stamp sets etc
All
of which will be useful for months if not years
of scrapbooking or card making. (Therefore investments like these will
offer long term value
to you). Then
you have supplies like adhesives (which you can purchase in refillable
format for under $10.00), ribbons (by the roll or the yard for approx.
$5.00 each or upto $20.00 in multipacks) and pens ($5.00 - $20.00 in
multipacks) that when bought in "economy" size will be of value to you
for a long time period. HINT:
Micheals Craft Store often releases coupons for 40%-50% off purchases
which is a phenominal savings when you are considering tools like Die
Cutting or Dry Embossing Machines or other "industrial" style tools.
So all in all....you can benefit from savings all
over the place AND all while utilizing the same scrapbooking supplies /
tools over and over again.
Your
scrapbooking investments will always bring you long term
value!
Keep
in mind however that ONE common thread among scrapbookers is the need
for something specific for each new project. These would
be items like (specilized (in theme, pattern, color etc) paper, ribbon,
embellishments and pen colors etc). - Patterned
Scrapbook Paper Sheets will cost $0.25 - $1.50/piece.
- Specialised Ribbon can cost $0.50-$2.50/yard
- Colored pens can cost $0.99-$2.99 each
- Specialized Accents and Embellishments can cost
$2.00-$10.00/item or package.
Etc.
So if you spend a lot of time doing one
off projects, you might be expecting to spend from $4.00
- $17.00 extra per project. PLUS the cost of the album itself.
But it should be unlikely that you would will do
this often anyhow. Now
for the step by step scrapbooking instructions...
Beginner Scrapbooking should be simple. But you can
still make your page a complete masterpiece if you are guided well
through those steps. Keep
in mind however that there are a few elements to every scrapbook page
that make a world of difference in how it presents.
- The
title.
- The
photo(s).
- The
matting
- The
accents (embellishments)
- The
journaling (story you wish to share)
- The
overall message (consistency is really the key here).
This
is where you need to exercise some creativity and skill. Possibly even
some technique. However - these traits will develop over time. They
don't have to be present right from the start. Here
are the traditional steps to make a
scrapbook.
- Chose
your focus. (Who, what, where or when) .
- Determine
the theme (it is pattern based, color based, nature based, artistic,
contemporary, baby, wedding, romance, school, heritage etc).
- Pick an album that best suits this theme
- Collect all the photo's you wish to use.
- Gather the corresponding card stock, papers, pens,
ribbons, embellishments and such.
- And
start planning your layouts.
This
is the planning phase.
Because you will have already determined your
layout(s) in phase one...you can start playing with the papers and
photo's that will fill them in. It's always good to do this BEFORE
committing them to paper with adhesives or stitching as you may ruin
your supplies if you try to undo something already glued down.
Once that is done...you can finally enter the commitment
phase. In this phase you will be committing your
supplies to paper. You will need scissors, exacto's, trimmers, shape
cutters, rulers, cutting boards, adhesives and the like. (What you need
will be up to you - and based on how perfect or complex you will want
to make the contents on your page). And
that's it!
You
can now make your first scrapbook page in 6 easy steps! "But
wait, there must be more to it than that right?" That is
correct. There is WAY more too it. You've
seen the masterpieces that everyone else has
done - and you deserve to learn how you can enjoy the rewards
of making one yourself. Well...
You are about to discover a little more about how
this highly therapeutic and extremely
rewarding hobby will help you make a scrapbook that says
everything you ever wanted to say but couldn't find the words for!
There is
more to Scrapbooking than 6 simple steps..... With what I am
about about to teach you, you
will be able to complete your first Scrapbook "Album" not just a page and
it will be a masterpiece!
Your Scrapbook Pages will be your own
Masterpieces and the pride you will feel from doing them will be unlike
any other pride you have EVER experienced!
After you finish reading through this webpage, you
will be stunned at what you can do with Scrapbooking!!! (And when I use
the word Scrapbooking, I am also talking about Card Making and Party
Invitation Making and similar Paper Crafts).
Through this web site, you will learn that:
-
Scrapbooking is NOT hard.
Honestly. You were taught in school many of the essential skills you
need to create a scrapbook. -
Scrapbooking
does not require outrageously unique or expensive tools.
Yes. The better the tools - the better the outcome, but when you are
first starting out - you can save a little money by using standard
tools (like scissors, rulers, exacto's or even just a computer etc)!
-
Scrapbooking
does not require outrageously unique or expensive supplies.
Again, you can use many of the products you already have in your own
home for your first pages; then when you are ready you can move up to
the more "professional" supplies or create your own for minimal dollars.
-
Scrapbooking
does not require you to be a creative genius. Afterall
- at a basic level, making a scrapbook is very much like framing a
photo (but it looks way cooler!). -
Scrapbooking
does not require you to be photographic wizzard. I have
made gorgeous scrapbook pages out of the blurriest and smallest photo's
ever! -
Scrapbooking does not even require
you to think. Some of the best pages can come from
complete stillness of the mind (that's why it's so therapeutic).
Scrapbooking
is probably one of the most forgiving - yet rewarding hobbies you could
choose. You do not need to worry about doing it right! Scrapbooking
lends itself superbly to mistakes. I will show you how! In
fact, some of the best scrapbook masterpieces resulted from mistakes!
All you need is the desire to learn how to
scrapbook and the willingness to spend the time doing it.
Scrapbooking
is easy. I will "guarantee that" here and
now. You risk nothing but your time in getting started
with scrapbooking through me. Since I have not
formally introduced myself yet, my name is Cijaye DePradine.
I am a teacher/trainer by profession. It is my job to
simplify things and figure out ways to make them as cost effective as
possible. I promise - that I will do the same for you!
My first dabble in Scrapbooking was Collaging. I
plastered my high school agenda and photo albums with magazine cutouts.
Then I saw someone make a powder embossed birthday card at work. It was
so stunning. I could barely believe that it was hand made. It
definitely caught my attention - and I wanted to learn more about it.
My mistake however, was going to the craft stores
first. I bought hundreds of dollars of supplies and even a book to get
started. Then I made about 5 cards - that didn't look anything like the
one I saw at work NOR did it look like the ones I saw in the magazines.
Although I still loved what I created and felt very
proud of my work. I did feel a little embarrassed that I spent so much
money and it went no where.
So I decided to take some classes and
buy more books to go further with my new hobby. At the
same time, I also got wind of Scrapbooking. And I thought - wow, all
those supplies I bought for cards can be used on scrapbooks too! YAY!
But after all of the expenses and time I spent reading the scrapbooking
instructions in the magazines, I realized those were not
instructions
on scrapbooking for beginners!
I was getting upset....
So...I started back tracking and gathering the card
making and scrapbooking directions that were easy to follow. I made a
scrapbook of them - in what I believed to be some sort of chronological
order. I shared it with my friends and family members and I got great
feedback on it. All
of us were card making and scrapbooking experts in no time!
Then came Scrapbooking Photo's in Frames,
Scrapbooking Tags, Scrapbooking, Tins and making Mini Scrapbook Albums.
So here I am today. Sharing my 20 years of
experience with you.
-
It

more than $20.00 USD and it will WOW that person!
...but, regardless of your reason for
wanting to learn how to scrapbook, you should learn how
